For the first couple of days, the most terrifying thing to them was that they couldn't sense anyone anymore. After getting over the initial shock of suddenly being somewhere completely different from where they were before, after finally getting enough courage to leave the nice fallen tree they had made their home, they decided to explore. Keeping the two volumes that came over with them close to their chest with their upper pair of arms, they started forward, trying their best to scan the area. "Hello?" They would shout every once in a while. "This one... this one requires some help! Hello?" Surely their group wouldn't have left without them? Perhaps they had been captured? The thoughts rolled around in their mind before they stopped, staring at the ground. Maybe they shouldn't have yelled, in that case. They quickly looked around, trying their best to shrink down to avoid detection.
(sorry it took me so long to reply to this!!! i felt self conscious lmao)
Hen wasn't sure how they'd stumbled this far- it was a near miracle that they'd even survived this long. All manner of strange creatures lived in this world, and most seemed hellbent on eating them. At least the worst they'd gotten were some scratches and bruises. They could be in something's belly.
The ground squished under their shoes- thank god they hadn't been in sandals whenever... well, whenever whatever happened had happened. It still didn't really make sense, but they had more important things to worry about.
Far to the left, they heard something. Was that a shout? They froze, frowning. It certainly didn't sound dangerous, but maybe it was a trap? But it was the first thing they'd heard that had actually spoken in this place. It was worth a peek.
They tried to be stealthy, but squishy bog ground and a heavy skirt were not very conducive to silence. They tried to sneak up on whatever had been shouting. There wasn't a lot of cover. They mistook a nettle patch for innocuous bush to their chagrin. Well, at least they were obscured. Sort of. What on earth was that thing? They'd seen some shit in their time, and it was certainly new. They tried to lean back and sneak back off (really, what were the odds this creature was friendly?) but ended up tripping and falling with a loud splash into a puddle behind them.

(yeah same I was su p er nervous about posting hehe)
Iveri immediately tensed up when they heard the splash. Slowly turning their head, they stared down at the direction they heard the noise at. "H-hello?" They managed to stutter out. After waiting a moment or two, they carefully shifted the tomes down to their lower pair of arms, as uncomfortable as it was, to go see what caused the noise. The thought ran through their mind, that perhaps it was one of the desert-goers that hunted them, who was coming back to see if they had left... But they shook their head, if it was, they wouldn't have been able to leave in the first place.
Pushing themselves across the ground with their fins, they made their way over to where they had heard the splash.
They bit back all manner of foul words. Great, now their clothes were wet and covered in mud, and they'd probably gotten the attention of every hungry animal in a six mile radius.
All right, that might be exaggeration, but they didn't like making all this noise. They needed to get out of here, and perhaps learn to not be so goddamn clumsy. They began to shakily rise to their feet, ready to sprint away.
"H-hello?"
They paused. That certainly wasn't the sound of an aggressive animal. It sounded more like someone who was scared and lost. There was an unsettling squishing noise, like something was being dragged across the ground. Was now really the time to be curious? That really hadn't sounded like a threatening voice, but caution seemed advisable in this situation.
Still, they peeked through the reeds. The big blue thing was cautiously sliding towards where they were. They appeared to be holding something with writing on it, but not in a language Hen could read. Trying not to flinch, they spoke.
"Hello," they said. What if the creature thought they might attack them? They didn't look very... scary. Or mean. "I- I won't attack you. Or anything like that."

When they heard the other speak, they visibly relaxed. Finally! Someone friendly! Even if it wasn't someone from their group, they were getting sick of being all alone. Still though, they couldn't sense anything from this new person, emotions or otherwise. It was so strange not being able to sense anyone anymore...
"This one was so worried, this one thought that they were captured!" They exclaimed, shifting the tomes in their lower set of arms again, having the corners up against the membranes that connected their arms to their body was very uncomfortable. "Say, would you, perhaps, know where we are?"
Perhaps this creature wasn't a bloodthirsty monster. They were right about something, for once.
They didn't really understand what the other being was talking about. Something about being captured? It was so different from what they were used to. Hen felt pretty thrown off, but they tried to speak anyway. They hadn't really spoken to anyone in a while. Their family used to joke that human islands existed, and that they were one, but Hen wasn't so sure...
"I don't know where, um, we are." They fumbled over the we a little. They didn't consider themself aligned with this new being, but they didn't want to upset the first person they met.
They paused. How much should they tell them?
"I know there's a desert to the south, but I'm pretty lost."

"Oh." Iveri gave a bit of a frown, the fins on their head drooping slightly. "That is unfortunate." They paused, staring at Hen, tilting their head to the side.
"May I ask what... species you are?" Iveri asked hesitantly, the only ones they did know was their own and the animals that roamed the desert on their home planet.
"Um," Hen began. They weren't quite sure where exactly to begin to answer this creature's question. It was a bit of an odd topic at home, even with others who knew what humans and harpies were... and that they could have children.
"I'm a human." They said. They doubted they'd be spending much time with this creature. Details weren't necessary.
"Do you... know what that is?" They ventured. They seemed vaguely humanoid, but quite unlike anything Hen had seen before. They really doubted it.

"A human?" Iveri closed their eyes and moved their head around, trying to recall if they had ever heard of such a species. "I don't think this one has ever heard of such a thing. This one apologizes."
They shifted the tomes in their arms again, reaching up to scratch at their face with their upper left arm. "This one supposes they should introduce themselves. This one is called Iveri, and this one guesses it is nice to meet someone who isn't hostile."
"No, it's okay," Hen said quickly as Iveri apologized. They didn't want this creature experiencing any guilt over something they most likely couldn't help.
Iveri's manner of speaking was a bit hard for Hen to wrap their head around, but the greeting was polite enough. Iveri was probably not going to attack them. Unless they planned on bludgeoning them with a book, in which case, running would be easy.
"Yeah, same. Listen, have you... seen any water around? That's not full of mud, I mean." Maybe Iveri would have seen something. They seemed nice enough, but Hen still wasn't sure how to feel about the situation.

"This one woke up somewhere near a lake." They chirped up, giving a kind-of smile. "This one thinks that they can lead you back to it, if you wish." After all, Iveri preferred being near lakes than swamps, the lakes offered more room to swim about.
Obviously at no point did the thought of being attacked by this new person ever cross their mind. They were just happy to have someone to speak to.
pookakin: i added a note in the lore section- all beings are able to communicate and understand each other in the portal. i thought some people might be confused!
